RE: How slow is unsafe?

I support pulling off to let those in a hurry pass and I do it all the time but sometimes it just isn't a solution. For example, within a busy national park with a lot of traffic one would have to pull off the road every couple of miles. The only solution then is patience on the part of those in a hurry.

RE: How slow is unsafe?

Saving fuel just gives me one more excuse to tow at a leisurely 55-57 MPH even on interstates which is what I do. But then I don't really need an excuse, do I, as long as I am within the legal speed limit. If other people get impatient that really isn't my problem. I think I have a right to drive at my comfort level. I know it can create a dangerous situation if others choose to try to pass, etc, but so is driving faster dangerous.

RE: Roof Fan

When we bought our used 5th wheel in 2002, we had the dealer install a fantastic fan in the ceiling vent opening above the bed and what a good decision. You can either have it blow out and open windows to draw in fresh air or have it blow down directly on you and leave the windows closed. Also, it will run all night on battery and not discharge the battery. We usually have it on at night and it is great at masking outside noises also.

Elec System Question- Help

We have a small 5th wheel with 1 onboard battery. Just started noticing that, when we unplug from the 110 and the trailer should and always has switched over to battery power we will sometimes have zero power so that there are no lights, can't do the front jacks, etc. But then we may abruptly get battery power again. When there is no power, the battery moniter registers discharged battery but when the power comes back on it shows fully charged or nearly so. So, I'm thinking that its not that the battery isn't charging. I'm not much of a mechanic. Any suggestions for simple things to check before we head to the RV repair shop? The trailer is a 1999 and the battery is 2 or 3 years old at most.

RE: Using the bathroom in the winter

Don't know what climate you are talking about but severe winter, with temps well below freezing present all kinds of problems for RVs. First of all, you have to take measures to insure that the water coming into the RV (usually a hose) won't freeze. But even so, the actual water lines within the RV can freeze. Then, the connection to the sewer would also freeze. Usually, you have to winterize the RV by pumping anti-freeze throughout the lines and stool, etc.

RE: Just finishing the season

That's a long committment unless that's what you want and need. We have just completed our 6th summer of workamping but never the full season. This year we worked July 1- Sept 7; about right. I think the shorter season keeps us from burning out and wanting to go again next year. We've always worked 40 hrs/week for full pay.

Charging with Honda 2000 question

I know that, when I have the trailer pluged into the Honda 2000 generator that it is recharging the battery. My question is- Will it recharge faster if I turn off the econo setting so that the genarator runs at a higher RPM or will it recharge just as well if I run the generator at the lowest idle speed on the econo setting; thereby, saving fuel? In other words, will the generator run just as fast as it needs to meet the demand? I'm confident that many of you will have the answer to this simple, tech question.

RE: Towing in 3rd gear

I have that same motor/rearend combo. Maybe my small 5th wheel is heavier but in tow/haul mine never shifts into 4th overdrive so I am always towing in 3rd, no need to put the gearshift in 3rd as the computer is already telling it to stay in 3rd. I wonder if it could have been your torque converter kicking in and out instead of the trans shifting. That's what mine did for a long time before I replaced the trans(at 130,000 miles)

RE: Pulling a car behind our fifth wheel. Against the Law !

Can't imagine trying to pull anything behind a trailer. Good reasons that it's illegal. Are you just trying to get people stired up?

RE: spider!!

Are you sure. I don't think they are that big. But, if you are counting the legs and off a little on your extimation; maybe.

RE: For Employers - Workamper Package

We are workers just finishing our 6th summer and our 2nd with the same employer. We consider this to be the best jobs and best employer of the 5 we have had. Not a campground but a retail store near a major national park. We get $8.50/hr., working 40 hrs/ week for a total of 80 paid hours per week. We live in an employee RV site for which they charge us $30/ week. They gave us a 50 cent raise for our 2nd year. We think this is a good package as the pay makes it worthwhile to travel to the job.

RE: Would you buy a high mileage vehicle as a tow vehicle?

Yes and no. I bought my Chevy with 47,000 miles and it now has 150,000 and I'm going for 200,000 but I don't think I would want to buy one with that many to start with. But, then it all depends on your budget and how willing one is to accept the need for major repairs, such as transmissions etc. The price would have to be really low and the appearance and condition very good. I don't think there are any rules or limits any more about high mileage.

RE: Earning xtra cash with your computer

You know, I hear a lot about "working from your home", especially using a computer but I am very skeptical. I don't really know of anyone doing it; do you? My daughter is dabling in doing it but she is skeptical also so far- too inconsistent and not really paying much for the time put in. So I think unless one has a high level of skill and is actually working for a stable, known employer- not likely to happen but Good Luck.

RE: No specific questions just ....

Sounds like you have enough income so that you could pick and choose jobs a little and work for fun, sort of. My only thought is about the waiting. Life is short and the workamping we have done has been pretty hard and it seems like a new body part hurts every yeareven though we do enjoy it . It takes me 2 weeks to get used to being on my feet 8 hours but then we work 40 hrs/ week. My point is that we may be alive at 70 or 75 but no guarantee we will feel like traveling around the country and workamping so better do it now.

RE: Compensation

For comparison, here is what we get-- $8.50/hr.(a raise for our 2nd year) for a total of 80 hrs/ week. Our RV site for $30/week. Limited wireless internet. 20% discount on some company merchandise.

Diesel Questions

For those of you with a 3/4 ton diesel, if any of you are towing a small 5th wheel weighing 5000-8000 lbs loaded; some questions to help me decide if I want diesel--What MPG do you get not towing(because our truck is our only vehicle); both top highway MPG and a realistic average of city/highway? What MPG towing? How about other extra costs of a diesel, oil change, etc. Any worries about cold weather starting? Anything else I should know. I would not be buying new; but would go for the $12000-$19000 range.

RE: Extended Warranty

From a strictly financial point of view an extended warranty is never a good idea. Of course, if you are unlucky enough to have a whole bunch of problems within a short time it might be in your favor but statistically speaking you're much better off puting that money in an interest bearing account to use later for repairs. They generate much more money for the seller that the buyer.

This Is Pretty Good

Well, We're working for the 2nd summer at a job at a store, just outside Glacier NP in Montana and its a pretty nice deal I think. The weather is great, dry, moderately warm, cool nights, full pay for 40 hrs/wk. and the employer offers a choice of a company RV site within 4 minutes of the store or a private RV park, 5 miles away. Of course its on your feet a solid 8 hours with only a half hour meal break and the work can get hard.

RE: future workcamper question

Short answer to a fairly complex question. We have only used Workamper as a guide as to some potential employers for us to contact on our own. That is, we see their ad, and we go ahead and contact them with a sort of "feeler e-mail"; giving them a very brief summary about us. If they respond positively, we carry the process on. It has not been difficult at all to get jobs of the type we have worked at(fully paid, 40 hr/week jobs at retail business serving the large western national parks). Once you get a job and live in the area you will also learn of many other jobs.

RE: Expected Campground Compensation?

Just to give you an idea- We will be starting work for our 6th summer at 40 hr/wk jobs for about 11 weeks at about $7.50/hr. and the employer will charge us about $5/day for our site. I have found that we can extimate an approximate weekly take-home income of $500. That's both of us working a total of 80 hours and that figure hasn't varied too much over the years and with different jobs. However, many workamper jobs have very different arrangements. Some are more volunteer positions than paying jobs and may pay little if any more than a free site.
